The Partnership conducts quarterly board meetings that not only deal with organizational business issues but also provide interesting discussion on topical education subjects. You will find reports on those meetings here.

The Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta was the site for the May 6 quarterly meeting.  More than 100 board members and education stakeholders attended the session that not only covered Partnership Board business but offered a thorough presentation on achievement gap issues.  Ms. Daria Hall, assistant policy analyst, The Education Trust, provided the informative briefing which challenged attendees to adopt an attitude subscribed to by schools that are achieving in spite of the odds they face:  focus on can, not on can't; set high expectations for every student; and leave nothing to chance.  Here is her PowerPoint briefing.  Ms. Hall often referred to Atlanta Public School's Capitol View Elementary School as an example of a program beating the odds.  Here is the Education Trust's profile of Capitol View.

The previous Board meeting was held at Georgia Public Broadcasting February 12 and focused on Early Care and Learning issues.  The event featured presentations by two nationally prominent educators - Greg Duncan, Professor, School of Education and Social Policy, Northwestern Univ. and Sara Watson, Senior Officer, State Policy Initiatives Div., The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Partnership for America's Economic Success.  The two were joined later by Donna Hyland, Chief Operating Officer, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Phil Jacobs, retired AT&T/BellSouth executive, for a panel discussion, moderated by Ms. Pat Willis, executive director of Voices for Georgia's Children, on early childhood issues.  Dr. Holly Robinson, Commissioner, Bright from the Start:  Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, concluded the discussion with information on what issues DECAL is focusing on.  To watch the enntire Board meeting, click here.  Thank you to Georgia Public Broadcasting for their continuing support.

The last 2007 meeting was also held at Georgia Public Broadcasting, November 7.  This was the Partnership's annual Policymakers Panel.  More than 100 attendees gathered to get an insight on what key issues may be looming in the coming 2008 legislative session.  Members of the panel included Rep. Brooks Coleman, Chairman, House Education Committee; Sen. Dan Weber, Chairman, Senate Education and Youth Committee; Ms. Jennifer Rippner, executive director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement and Governor Perdue's Education Policy Advisor; and Mr. Dean Alford, Chairman, Governor's Finance Task Force.  The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Steve Smith, Vice President for Corporate Responsibility, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.  To view the panel discussion, click here.  The first portion of the meeting is devoted to audience introductions without a microphone so it is hard to hear.  You may fast forward to the eight minute mark for the start of the panel.

The September 6 meeting featured Ms. Aimee Guidera, Director of the Data Quality Campaign, National Center for Educational Accountability, who presented "The Power of Data In Improving Student Achievement." Following Ms. Guidera's presentation, a panel composed of Joy Hawkins, Vice President, Regional Education, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce; Katie Lovett, Chief Information Officer, Fulton County Schools; Travis Willard, Deputy Superintendent for Technology Services and Chief Information Officer, and Guidera discussed Georgia's use of data in improving student achievement.

The previous Board meeting, which featured a report on the Quality Learning and Teacher Environments resurvey and a special presentation on what is ahead for education by futurist Gary Marx, was held May 1.
