The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education works with various organizations, programs and efforts that are reforming education in our state. Our involvement varies, depending on what is needed to accomplish results.
Members of the Partnership are often involved in various programs and events that further the cause of public education in our state.
The Partnership's President Dr. Steve Dolinger participated in the Georgia Family Connection Partnership's roll out of the latest Kids Count report. Here is his brief presentation. The report (Georgia at the Tipping Point - Making 20 Years of Data Count for Kids and Families) is available on the Research and Issues (Policy) page.
Another such event was this year's Business to Business Magazine's public forum: "A Progress Report On Georgia's Public Education System." Partnership President Dr. Steve Dolinger once again moderated the panel discussion. This meeting was designed to look at the progress made since last year's forum in three specific areas: Early learning, recruitment and retention of quality teachers, and effective school board governance.
Members of the panel included Donna Buchanan, COO, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta; Ann Cramer, Director, IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs; Kelly Henson, Executive secretary, Georgia Professional Standards Commission; Gary Price, Market managing partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; and Amy Mast, Director, Alliance of Education Agency Heads.
Lively and frank discussion kept the audiences' attention and the question and answer period at the conclusion of the discussion was pointed on several topics including funding and a student information system that can provide the data needed to make wise, systemic decisions.
The panelists agreed that Georgia has momentum in its public education system but if there is not a total commitment across the board - educators, business leaders, citizens, parents and others - the state will not reach its goal of providing a world class education system to its citizens.
The two-hour forum on June 23 is available here via audio recording. Visit the Business to Business Web site.
The Georgia Partnership has several programs that are designed to inform and influence Georgia leaders. Among them:
Education Policy Fellowship Program - This new intiative has wrapped up its inaugural class. Applications for the second program are now being accepted. Deadline submission is June 30.
Economics of Education - This program first began in 2004 when the Partnership and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce joined to raise awareness across the state that education truly is economics.
Education Policy Forum - Every election year since 2002, the Partnership has teamed with the Georgia School Boards Association to present a half day seminar for local school board and state legislative candidates on education in Georgia.
Quarterly Board Meetings - Education stakeholders in the Metro Atlanta area always look forward to these meetings that feature indepth looks at topical Georgia and national issues.
Curriculum Audit - The Partnership was asked to conduct an independent audit of the new Georgia Performance Standards that was being built in 2004. The audit was helpful to the Department of Education as they constructed the new "world class" curriculum that is now in effect.
Annual Bus Trip Across Georgia - This event first began in 1993 as an effort to both recognize excellence in public education across the state and to share many best practices beyond their local boundaries.
Media Symposium - This program began in 2007 when education reporters and editors were invited to Atlanta to get the latest education information and to meet personally with education policymakers.
